Q: Can you connect a snap hook/carabiner into the eye of another snap hook/carabiner?

A:

Always avoid to connect one snap hook/carabiner into the eye of another snap hook/carabiner. The hook needs to align with the applied load if connected to the eye of another hook, the hook may not be able to move or rotate when a load is applied. Compatibility between the two connections may also be a concern. ​

Q: Should you wear a DBI-SALA® Full Body Harnesses over or under winter clothing?

A:

A harness should be worn over winter clothing. It is more visible for inspections and there is less chance for clothing to interfere with buckles and snap hooks. Additionally, when the harness is on the outside, if there is a fall and the harness is pulled upward, there is less possibility that the person could be choked.​

Q: What is the capacity of the DBI-SALA® EZ Stop™ Expander™ Shock Absorbing Lanyard (ex. model 1245534)?

A:

This Shock Absorbing lanyard has a 130kg capacity.

Q: What is the capacity of the DBI-SALA® Suspension Trauma Safety Strap (model 9501403)?

A:

As they are accessory equipment so do not have a capacity as such, though 140kg would be the typical capacity of a Capital Safety harness.

Q: Is it acceptable to attach your fall protection system to scaffolding?

A:

Yes, if the scaffold will support the potential loadings, and the scaffold manufacture approves such use, you can attach your fall protection system. Make certain your connecting hardware incorporates hooks large enough to fully close and lock when attached to the scaffolding (ex. Lanyard with scaffold hook).​ Also make sure the connecting hardware (snap hook) is allowed to be used in this orientation.​

Q: What harness and lanyard fall protection products are recommended for easy clean up, such as when used around waste water, paint, etc.?

A:

​We suggest resist-coated web products. Resist-coated webbing is polyurethane and will allow the web to be cleaned much easier. Capital Safety offers several DBI-SALA® harnesses, lanyards that incorporate the specialized resist-coated web.​

Q: What is the maximum free fall distance allowed by European standards?

A:

The maximum free fall distance allowed is 4 m, this would be on an energy absorbing lanyard.

Q: Is there a specific height at which point fall protection is required?

A:

A worker must be protected when there is a risk of fall, there is no minimum height.

Q: Where can I get a copy of an European standards?

A:

You can purchase a standard  in  English, in PDF format from the BSI web site.

Q: What does the statement “100 percent fall protection” refer to?

A:

The term “100 percent fall protection” means that, at all times when a person is exposed to a fall hazards, he or she must be protected by an active or passive fall protection system. Active systems include fall arrest systems such as a full body harness, lanyard and anchor point. A passive system could be a guardrail or net.

Q: What is the anchorage strength required by European standards for fall restraint systems?

A:

An anchor point what meet the EN795 standard is required.

Q: What is a choker loop on a lanyard (instead of a snap hook), and how should it be used?

A:

​The choker loop is the large open loop on the end of the lanyard that attaches to the dorsal D-ring or web loop on the harness. It allows you to pass the lanyard assembly through it in order to secure (choke-off) the assembly to the harness. The choker loop is normally made from 25mm wide web that is used with dorsal web loop harnesses. Lanyards with choker loops do not contain a hook at that end.​

Q: What types of training does Capital Safety offer?

A:

Capital Safety offers a full range of fall protection and rescue training, including Competent Person training, Awareness training, Qualified Person training, Inspection training, CE and climbing courses and more. Our programs range from four hours to five days and can be taken at one of our training centres, or we can come to your facility. Q: What is the maximum usable life of a height safety product?

A:

If the product is textile (e.g. harness, Lanyard etc.) or contains a textile element (e.g. rope, web, etc.) we recommend removing the item from use 10 years from its manufacture date. In some cases where the product  contains a textile element, it may be possible to replace the textile element to increase the usable life of the product in excess of 10 years.

Q: Which attachment point on a harness can I use with an Energy Absorbing lanyard?

A:

A full body fall arrest harness, would have normally have a back dring for  fall arrest (Fall arrest points are marked with an 'A') some models would also have a front fall arrest attachment point also. Either the front or back fall arrest attachment point may be used.

Q: Which type of harness should I use with Vertical Ladder system?

A:

If the Vertical Ladder system is permanently fixed at top and bottom, a full body fall arrest harness with a front Dring will be required. If the Vertical system is temporary, (typically in rope) it may be possible to attach the traveller to either the front or back Dring of a full body fall arrest harness.

Q: Which attachment point on a harness can I use with an SRL?

A:

A full body fall arrest harness, would have normally have a back dring for  fall arrest (Fall arrest points are marked with an 'A') some models would also have a front fall arrest attachment point also. Either the front or back fall arrest attachment point may be used, though typically the back attachment is preferred to allow the user to work unhindered by the cable.
